The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said it had not received any inquiries from US law enforcement regarding the Chinese swimmers’ positive doping tests.
On Thursday, it was announced that the U.S. government had opened a federal investigation into doping by Chinese athletes.
— WADA was disappointed to learn that the U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating the positive doping tests of 23 swimmers in China. At this time, WADA has not received any contact or inquiries from U.S. law enforcement.
“WADA has carefully reviewed the Chinese swimmers’ case, consulted with scientific and legal experts, and ultimately concluded that it was unable to challenge the sample contamination scenario and that an appeal was therefore not warranted. Guided by science and in consultation with experts, we stand by this decision in good faith in the face of the misleading information on which this investigation is based,” a statement on WADA’s official website said.
On April 21, The New York Times published an article stating that trimetazidine had been found in the samples of 23 Chinese swimmers ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. According to the publication, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, as a result of which the party adhered to the version that the substance had entered the athletes’ bodies unintentionally and in small quantities. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted CHINADA’s conclusions. The authors of the New York Times material accused the agency of ignoring the data of informants, as well as of inconsistency in handling various doping cases.
It had previously been reported that 11 of the 23 swimmers who tested positive in 2021 would compete in the 2024 Games.
The 2024 Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
