Water polo player Merkulov: “I focus on playing for the club, but I want us to be able to play for the Russian national team in tournaments”

Russian water polo player Daniil Merkulov said he is currently focused on playing for the club, but hopes to play for the national team in international tournaments.

Merkulov won the Champions League with Ferencvaros this season. As Andrei Belofastov, head coach of the Russian men’s national team, told , Merkulov was not specifically called up to the training camp in Serbia, as he had finished the season just before.

— At club level, you have won everything. What more do you want?

– I am waiting for the result. I received many financially interesting offers from other clubs. But I chose Italy because there is some kind of development there, I can grow as a player. I like Italian culture, the country itself, the sea, the sun. And the team will grow, I want to contribute to it. In addition, my Italian friends said that Pro Recco liked me and they were interested in me. Maybe in the future I will be able to join this team after playing in Italy. It is the dream of every player, like many football players, to play for Real Madrid,” Merkulov told .

— So you beat the dream team in this final?

— Well, Real Madrid doesn’t always win everything either. In general, I wouldn’t refuse to become the first Russian player in the history of Pro Recco.

— If I understand correctly, you had not planned to join the national team after the Champions League?

“Right now I’m focused on playing for the club. I would really like all the avenues to be open for us to play for the national team in tournaments. It’s not possible yet. And coming to training camps just to train – I can do that as a member of a club.
