Athletistic / Chess. The press service of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced the death of Sigrun Een, the mother of former Norwegian world chess champion Magnus Carlsen.

The Grandmaster’s mother died in Oslo (Norway) after a long illness. She was 61 years old.

“It is with sadness that we learned of the passing of Sigrun Een, the mother of Magnus Carlsen, our deepest condolences go to the former world champion, his family and friends,” FIDE said in a statement.

Carlsen became world champion in 2013, beating India’s Viswanathan Anand. The Norwegian went on to defend the title four times.
