Athletes’ compensation for non-admission to 2024 Olympics is paid by sponsors – Zhurova

Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Olympic champion Svetlana Jourova said that compensation for athletes for not being allowed to participate in the Paris Olympics is not paid by the state, but by sponsors.

Earlier, canoeist Viktor Melantyev told that Russian Olympic champions, who did not sign a declaration of neutrality and will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympics, received compensation in the amount of about 500,000 rubles. Melantyev himself, as a participant in the Olympics, received 130,000 rubles.

— Payments were made even earlier for those who did not participate in international competitions – for Olympic champions and prize-winners. For those who would have the best chance of qualifying for the Games. You understand that athletes spend this money on themselves, on their training – to maintain and improve their skills. For equipment – not only for what is standard for everyone, but also for some additional equipment.

It is necessary to take into account that this is not government money. People may say that this is a very large sum, but it is paid by sponsors, this is not a budget. The Olympic Committee decided to make such a gesture for our athletes and support them – and this is absolutely correct. And it is good that sponsors spend money not only, relatively speaking, on football, but also to support our best Summer Olympic athletes. This applies to athletes who did not compete in neutral status and did not take part in tournaments – for example, athletes of the wrestling and judo federations took part in the selections and will not receive this compensation, “Gazeta.Ru quotes Zhurova as saying.

In February 2022, the IOC recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were softened, and in December 2023, IOC chief Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who had passed the selection process to the 2024 Summer Games in an individual neutral status. The athletes will be able to perform in Paris without a flag, anthem, or other national symbols.

The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11.
