De La Hoya: Bogachuk vs. Ortiz is ‘Fight of the Year’

Bogachuk vs. Ortiz fight to take place August 10 in Las Vegas

Legendary former world champion and now promoter Oscar De La Hoya shared his expectations from the fight between the Ukrainian WBC world champion in the first middleweight division Sergey Bogachuk (24-1, 23 KO) with the WBO International welterweight title holder Vergil Ortiz (21-0, 21 KOs).

“Virgil is a special fighter. As soon as we saw him in the amateurs, we knew this guy was talented and a future star of the next generation. He has a killer instinct and incredible strength. If he smells blood, he will finish you. That’s the essence of him, which I really like.”

“Bogachuk… it’s like looking in a mirror. It’s incredible, but Sergey has the same ability and the same strength as Virgil. Bogachuk is an amazing boxer, a hard worker and an old school fighter.”

“I’m not putting on airs, I just want to make sure the world knows this is going to be the ‘Fight of the Year.’ It’s going to be a high-octane, all-out war, all-out brawl. We’ve got two warriors with power and skill. These guys aren’t going to back down. This is a fight that’s going to be exciting. It’s going to be talked about for a long time.”

The fight between Bogachuk and Ortiz will take place on August 10. The event will take place in Las Vegas at the Michelob Ultra arena in the famous Mandalay Bay casino. The interim WBC title, which Bogachuk holds, will be at stake.

Let us recall that the Ukrainian confidently defeated the American Brian Mendoza in a fight that took place in late March in Las Vegas. Following 12 rounds, all judges gave the victory to Bogachuk – 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111.

Vergil Ortiz defeated Tomas Dulorme from Puerto Rico in his last fight. The American has won all his fights ahead of schedule.
