“I don’t consider them enemies.” Shubenkov spoke about the attitude towards rivals

110m hurdles world champion Sergei Shubenkov said he does not consider his opponents on the track as enemies.

At the 2022 Russian Championship in Cheboksary, Shubenkov won with a score of 13.38 seconds.

– I wouldn’t say (that rivals are enemies). In general, I think that sport is something unifying. Not a war. Neither at the Russian level, nor at the global level. It is clear that we are not friends, but stewing in the same pot and being at enmity is at least stupid,” Shubenkov said in an interview with RT.

The best result in the career of a 31-year-old athlete is 12.92 seconds.

– I went through all the stages. When I was young, I ran for a long time with the feeling that they were shooting – and in the next moment, here it is, the finish line. When I reached the level of serious results, I spoke to many people – with the same Colin Jackson. He asked how it feels to run for a world record. And everyone agreed that it was very easy. When I ran 12.92 myself I realized it was true. Which I just didn’t have time to think about in this race. I ran absolutely relaxed, it seemed like I had absolutely everything under control and I could do everything from a distance,” Shubenkov said.

Since 2015, Russian athletes can only participate in international competitions in neutral status due to the suspension of the VFLA. In March, the World Athletics Association (World Athletics) suspended the Russians due to the situation in Ukraine.
