Los Angeles coach Cerundolo is the leading contender for the vacant US national team head coaching job

After Berhalter’s dismissal, the federation approached Klopp but was refused

Head coach LA FC Steven Cherundolo — the main candidate for the role of successor Gregg Berhalter at the head Team USA.

Recall that yesterday the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) officially announced Berhalter’s resignation as head coach of the men’s national team due to unsatisfactory performance at the 2024 Copa America at home.

Jurgen Klopp, who left Liverpool after last season, was considered a priority candidate for the vacant position. However, the German specialist has reportedly already refused. Therefore, the federation will continue its search among local specialists, and Cerundolo is No. 1 on this list.

Stephen is 45 years old. He spent his entire professional football career in Hannover, Germany (1999-2014, 423 matches, 8 goals). For several years, Cerundolo crossed paths with Berhalter both in the US national team and on the fields of Germany – Gregg played there for Energie and Munich 1860.

Steven began his coaching career as an assistant in the youth teams of Hannover, then in Stuttgart. In 2018, he was briefly an assistant to Dave Sarakan in the national team. He gained his first independent experience in the Las Vegas Lights (2021).

Since 2022, Cerundolo has been the head coach of Los Angeles FC. He won the MLS Cup with the club and reached the CONCACAF Champions League final.

Let us recall that at the home Copa America 2024, the Stars and Stripes failed to reach the playoffs, suffering two defeats (to Panama and Uruguay) and finishing third in Group C.

There are two matches left to play in the tournament. On the night of July 14, Canada and Uruguay will play for the bronze medals, and a day later, the final duel will take place between Argentina and Colombia.
