The Board of Directors of the International Triathlon Union (World Triathlon) has approved a policy on the participation of transgender athletes in competitions.
New restrictions will be introduced after 30 days.
– To participate in triathlon competitions in the women’s elite category or in a certain age group, a transgender athlete must prove that the testosterone concentration has been below 2.5 nmol/l continuously for at least two year. Additionally, at least four years must have passed since a transgender athlete competed as a man in a sporting event, according to a statement posted on the official World Triathlon website.
World Triathlon President and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Marisol Casado said the new transgender policy is in line with IOC recommendations and the principles of equity and inclusion.
“We have been studying this issue for over a year, listening to the voices of all World Triathlon stakeholders. I can only thank all the committees and commissions for the painstaking work they have done in shaping this policy. We “We are a small international federation, but inclusivity and gender balance have always been in our DNA. The policy we have just approved shows that we prioritize equity while being inclusive,” said Casado said.
Earlier, the Congress of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) decided that transgender people who have transitioned after reaching the age of 12 will not be able to participate in women’s competitions under the auspices of this organization.
