Goals from Williams and Oyarzabal bring historic triumph to de la Fuente’s team
Spain won a victory over England in the final Euro 2024 and became the continental champion for a record fourth time – 2:1.
The first half was a cautious battle, without any serious tensions. Spain had a slight advantage, attacked more often and shot at goal, but the ball never reached Jordan Pickford. The Three Lions responded only with a shot from Phil Foden into the hands of Unai Simon just before the break.
The game exploded from the first seconds of the second half. Before the teams could get back into the game, the Red Fury was already ahead. Nico Williams, taking advantage of a pass from record-breaker Lamin Yamal, shot low past Pickford.
Hot on the heels, Spain continued to attack. Dani Olmo and Williams missed good chances – their shots lacked precision. In the 66th minute, Yamal could have buried the opponent, but Pickford saved his shot.
And then, once again, Gather Sightgate’s replacement played in the tournament. Cole Palmer, who had just come on, took advantage of a pass from Jude Bellingham and sent the ball into the far corner with a great long-range strike.
In the 81st minute, there was a déjà vu at the English goal – and once again Pickford emerged the hero from the duel with Yamal. But he, too, was powerless five minutes later when Marc Cucurella crossed from the left, and Mikel Oyarzabal got ahead of Marc Guehi and sent the ball into the goal with a dagger movement.
England missed a crazy moment in the 90th minute. Declan Rice’s corner kick was blocked by Simon, and Olmo stopped Guehi’s follow-up on the goal line. The British didn’t have time to create anything else near the opponent’s goal.
Spain won the European Championship for the fourth time and became the absolute record holder of the continent in this indicator. Behind them was Germany with three victories. Italy and France have two triumphs each.
England lost their second European final in a row (and their second under Southgate) and remain winless at continental level.
