The midfielder played for the main national team for 14 years
Midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri announced his retirement from Swiss national team.
“Seven tournaments, many goals, 14 years in the Swiss national team and unforgettable moments. It’s time to say goodbye to the national team. There are great memories left and I say to you all: Thank you!” the midfielder wrote on social media.
Xherdan made his debut for the Swiss national team in March 2010 in a friendly match against Uruguay (1:3). The 32-year-old midfielder played 125 games for the country’s main team, scoring 32 goals and making 34 assists. Shaqiri’s last tournament with the national team was the European Championship in 2024.
At Euro 2024, Switzerland reached the quarter-finals, losing to England on penalties. However, of their last 19 matches, the Swiss have lost only one – to Romania in the European Championship qualifiers.
Turning heads, high school students, 14 years old, Swiss National Assembly and extraordinary moments. This is the time when my country is afraid. They are always happy and always say: DON’T MISS, MERCY, GOODNESS, FAIL. 🇨🇭❤️… pic.twitter.com/qT9OoQK79x
