Former figure skater, now coach and choreographer Betina Popova shared his expectations for the new season in Russia.
Popova performed in ice dancing and, together with Sergei Mozgov, won gold at the 2019 Universiade.
– It will be an even more unpredictable season than the previous one. Many new interesting couples have appeared, and they are all, more or less, at the same level. The juniors turned out to be nice guys. They are also very serious – Ekaterina Rybakova/Ivan Makhnonosov, Anna Kolomenskaya/Artem Frolov, Anna Shcherbakova/Egor Goncharov. Three couples that the judges and the audience have already fallen in love with. They are in such an incomprehensible queue, which actually does not exist now. We do not really know what is happening anymore. It is really surprising, because everywhere in the world there is a very long queue to dance, but in Russia, as soon as you understand, that’s how you end up.
It will be a very interesting season here. There will be an interesting fight between Ira Khavronina/David Narizhny and Liza Khudaiberdieva/Egor Bazin; by the end of the season, they had already started to catch up with Liza and Egor, slightly following them. Of course, Sasha Stepanova/Vanya Bukin will remain leaders, it is understandable. And then, what will happen will be absolutely unclear. Vasilisa Kaganovskaya/Maxim Nekrasov, Elizaveta Pasechnik/Dario Chirisano and many others you can check out. It will be very hot dancing!
“I am really looking forward to Sonya Leontyeva and Danya Gorelkin. They are my favorites in themselves, the programs must be interesting too. Sonya and Dani’s eyes sparkle, they are madly in love with sports and it is most captivating. Their relationship as a couple, their willingness to experiment is magical,” Popova told Sport24.
Leontyeva and Gorelkin are silver medalists of the Russian Championship. This year, the couple took fifth place at the Russian Championship and became fourth at the Spartakiad of the strongest.
