“It’s not fair to our team” – Mirzoev on reducing quotas for Russia in figure skating

Coach and judge, silver medalist of the World Junior Pair Skating Championships, Vladislav Mirzoev spoke about the decision of the International Skating Union (ISU) to reduce the number of Russian quotas for the World Figure Skating Championships 2023 .

On Wednesday, the ISU published the quota allocation scheme for the 2022/23 season on the website. Russia has kept the maximum number of quotas for the European Championship, however, the World Championship will only be able to present one representative in each type of program if Russians are allowed to participate.

– A huge regret about this. Of course, due to the lack of maximum quotas for Russian athletes, many foreign skaters have the opportunity to win prizes at high-level competitions. Many of them deserve prizes, but to some extent competitions in this situation become dishonest in relation to our team. Even in the recent past, I was a member of the national team myself and I know what kind of work it takes for an athlete to win.

I wish our team courage, not to slow down and to move forward towards its main objective. Also, the Russian Federation is trying to support our skaters as much as possible and help solve the problem.

This ISU decision is based on valid rules. But, of course, I would like to hope that the management will revise the composition of these rules within the framework of the current situation. I firmly believe that sport should stay out of politics. Sport has always united and should unite people from different countries, Mirzoev told .
