The coach of the USSR national team, former judge Alexander Vedenin, spoke about the decision of the International Skating Union (ISU) to reduce the number of Russian quotas for the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships.
On Wednesday, the ISU published the quota allocation scheme for the 2022/23 season on the website. Russia has kept the maximum number of quotas for the European Championship, however, the World Championship will only be able to present one representative in each type of program if Russians are allowed to participate.
“It was to be expected. We did not participate in the 2022 World Cup. According to ISU rules, such a team has a minimum quota for the following year. It makes no sense to expect the rules to be changed for us.
Of course, Eteri Tutberidze is 100% right when he says that rating points should not be awarded without our participation. But only no one will hear it, not any of our representatives, because they don’t want to hear. We all think they will feel bad at the ISU because of our non-participation. And they are very good! I agree that we need to create our own league like the NHL and raise funds for it – more than the ISU gives. And then we’ll see who will be fine.
We have two sports in Russia where we are stronger than the whole world: figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics. Probably still synchronized swimming. The level of sporting and training achievements here exceeds anything even theoretically the rest of the world can give. It is therefore necessary to invest money in these sports which will make them independent of the whims of the leaders of the international federations! No need to wait and tearfully ask to be allowed in. It is up to us to decide which of the foreign athletes we allow to participate in our league and to pay a sum that exceeds anything the ISU can give.
The participation of even a few of our oligarchs in each sport will make these leagues the best in the world within a year. We just need to join forces. After all, nobody wants to see our oligarchs abroad either,” Vedenin told .
