Ilchenko on van Rauwendaal’s plan to take antibiotics before swimming in the Seine: ‘I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone’

Olympic Open Water Swimming Champion Larissa Ilchenko told that she would not advise athletes to take antibiotics before swimming in the Seine, whose water quality is questionable.

Earlier, Dutch swimmer and Olympic champion Sharon van Rauwendaal said she would take a dose of antibiotics before competing in the Seine River swim at the Paris Olympics.

– It’s funny, of course. Personally, I haven’t practiced this and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. If you take antibiotics without a good reason, you can easily develop antibiotic resistance and many problems with your digestive system – I don’t think it’s worth it. Open water conditions always carry a risk of intestinal disorders and during my sports days we used enterosorbents.

“She also talked about cola as a remedy after swimming.

— I also heard about cola, but I have not tried it myself. Although I remember that at one of the world championships, coaches poured it to their athletes on the feeding raft, but their goal was to compensate for carbohydrate costs – in my opinion, this is also a poor option. Once I swam at the World Cup in Singapore, swimming took place in the seaport and there were bags, razors and other unpleasant objects floating around that were thrown into the sea from ships. I swam with my head up for most of the distance. Then she swallowed enterosorbents.

“I am very picky and I understand very well the athletes who are now afraid for their health after swimming in dirty water. Of course, competitions of such a level as the Olympic Games and the World Championships must be held at a high level, including in terms of safety… And when you look at the video with the Seine, despite the foreign officials and officials diving into it in wetsuits, serious concerns arise about the safety of swimming in open water there,” Ilchenko told .

The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11.
