World champion Maria Butyrskaya spoke about the decision of the International Skating Union (ISU) to reduce the number of Russian quotas for the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships.
On Wednesday, the International Skating Union (ISU) published a quota allocation scheme for the 2022/23 season on its website. Russia has kept the maximum number of quotas for the European Championship, however, the World Championship will only be able to present one representative in each type of program if Russians are allowed to participate.
– For our daughters, of course, this is a small tragedy. It turns out that only one of them will have the opportunity to participate in the championship of the planet. On the other hand, they have introduced an age limit, so they will still have the opportunity to prove themselves without fear that 15-year-old competitors will come to replace them. But the Olympics are ahead, and so far it is also unclear whether the Russians will be allowed there. And people live off it. They work, shed sweat and blood while training to achieve their goal, but through no fault of their own, they may lose their dream. Just be patient and hope for the best. The current situation cannot last forever, Butyrskaya told RT.
