Three-time Olympic champion and deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Irina Rodnina told that the Canadian figure skating team’s desire to win bronze at the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing “doesn’t fit the rules.”
The Russian team won the team tournament, but after Kamila Valieva was disqualified, the results of the competition were revised. The International Skating Union (ISU), after cancelling Valieva’s results, placed the American team in first place, the Japanese team in second, and the Russian team in bronze. However, Team Canada skaters appealed the ISU decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), hoping to move up from fourth to third place.
“We got a good result, but we clearly deducted all the points earned by Valieva. This is according to the rules. Consider that we did not play at full capacity. Doesn’t everyone think that the decision regarding Valieva is fair? There are examples of indicators, she herself admitted, the decision is made. We are always looking for some kind of context, but we cannot deal with our own cockroaches.
Regarding the bronze medal, the wishes of the Canadians do not match, because there are rules by which athletes compete, Rodnina told .
The CAS considered the Canadian side’s appeal this week and the decision has not yet been published.
