Chinese world swimming champion Zhang Yufei has expressed hope that she and the entire Chinese team will not be negatively evaluated at the Paris Olympics amid the doping scandal.
Zhang Yufei first commented on the situation of the 23 Chinese swimmers. In April, it became known that trimetazidine had been found in doping tests conducted on athletes before the Tokyo Olympics. The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, after which it announced that the substance had entered the swimmers’ bodies unintentionally and in small amounts. WADA was unable to refute the Chinese version and did not punish the athletes.
“I don’t think anyone would risk destroying every day what we have worked for so many years because of doping. We are actively tested, we have passed many tests. I really hope that people here will not look at us negatively.
Before the scandal broke, I communicated well with athletes from other countries. Now I fear they will look at me differently. “I worry that the French public may think that Chinese athletes do not deserve the right to compete here,” says Zhang Yufei, a correspondent for .
The Paris Olympics will end on August 11.
