Argentina’s Olympic team beats Iraq in second round of 2024 Olympics

Albiceleste took their first points of the tournament

Olympic team Argentina played her second match in the football tournament Olympic Games 2024 — Javier Mascherano’s team beat Iraq (3:1).

The scoring was opened in the 13th minute – Thiago Almada scored from a pass by Julian Alvarez. Just before the break, Iraq restored the status quo – captain Ayman Hussein (who had scored against Ukraine three days earlier) opened the scoring with a header against Jeronimo Rulli.

And yet the second half of the match was dominated by the favourites of this pair – Argentina. In the 62nd minute, Albiceleste put Luciano Gondo ahead, and in the 85th minute, Ezequiel Fernandez put the finishing touches on the match. The second assist in this match was recorded by Julian Alvarez, who, together with the experienced Nicolas Otamendi and Jeronimo Rulli, occupies the permitted quota of three people over 23 years old in the Argentina squad.

Let us recall that Argentina and Iraq are the opponents of the Ukrainian national team in Group B. Ruslan Rotan’s team will play its second match of the tournament today against Morocco. The start is 18:00 Kyiv time.

Argentina will play their final group stage match of the 2024 Olympic Games against Ukraine, while Iraq will face Morocco. Both matches will take place on Tuesday, July 30.
