Evgenia Chikunova won the 200-meter breaststroke at the Russian Cup final in Yekaterinburg with the third result in swimming history.
In the deciding round, Chikunova clocked 2 minutes 18.98 seconds, the world’s best result of the season at this distance and the third best in history.
The 19-year-old Russian has held the 200m world record since April 2023 (2:17.55). The second result belongs to Tokyo 2020 champion Tatyana Smith of South Africa (2:18.95), who is currently competing at the Paris Olympics and is the main contender for gold medals in the breaststroke competition.
The women’s 200m breaststroke final at the 2024 Olympics will take place on August 1. Russian swimmers will not compete in this distance at the Paris Games.
