Svitolina: The soil at the Olympics is worse than at Roland Garros

Elina commented on her victory over Uchijima in the first round of the Olympic tournament

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina commented on her victory over Moyuki Uchijima from Japan singles Olympics 2024 in Paris.

“It doesn’t really feel like Roland Garros. Because the banners are different, and the court is a bit different, with many holes. The clay is completely different. Now I’m already in the mood for the Olympics, the Olympic spirit – when you wear Ukrainian colors, you have a completely different mood.”

“The soil at the Olympics is worse than at Roland Garros. The ITF decided somehow, perhaps, not to spend a lot of money, because Roland Garros is famous for its good courts. They look after them very, very closely.”

“I was preparing for a very strong match because she can play very well. She has won many tournaments, not top ones, but WTA 125. So I was preparing myself to play very well, to focus on every point. I am glad that I was able to get back into the game because she had an early break. It was not easy at first because anxiety plays its role, and you have to deal with it.”

Let us remind you, Svitolina easily advanced to the second round of the 2024 Olympic Games singles, beating Japanese Uchijima in two sets (6:2, 6:1). The Ukrainian gave up only three games to her opponent.

Earlier, Angelina Kalinina withdrew from the Olympic tournament. The Ukrainian’s opening match on Saturday was postponed to the next day due to rain, but on Sunday Angelina was unable to play due to illness.

After this, Ukraine’s number one tennis player Marta Kostyuk also beat Lulu Sun from New Zealand in two sets (6:4, 6:3).

Elina’s next opponent at the 2024 Olympics will be American Jessica Pegula, a representative of the Top 10 in the world rankings.
