The gold medal ceremony for U.S. figure skaters for their victory in the team event at the Beijing Olympics will take place on August 7, International Olympic Committee (IOC) communications director Mark Adams said at a press briefing.
— This is not a new medal ceremony. This is simply a medal ceremony, since they were not awarded at the Games at the time. This is an important clarification. We wanted this issue to be resolved as quickly as possible. But unfortunately, such processes can be very difficult. This late decision is problematic. But all processes had to be followed, Adams said.
Last week, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said it had rejected appeals by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), the Russian Figure Skating Federation (RFIKR) and Russian figure skaters against the International Skating Union’s (ISU) decision to redistribute team medals from the Beijing Games following the disqualification of Kamila Valieva.
In January, the ISU annulled Valieva’s results and moved the Russian team from first to third place. That left the U.S. team in first place and the Japanese team in second. Team Canada, which became the fourth to appeal the ISU decision to CAS, is also aiming for the bronze medal.
