Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov said he already feels much more confident on the ice.
In early 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized due to complications from pneumonia. The 47-year-old athlete began to suffer from tissue necrosis and underwent multiple limb amputations. Kostomarov later underwent prosthetic surgery.
“At first it was scary and exciting to participate in the show every day. Every time after skating, 2-3 hours later I go out on the ice and I don’t have any special sensations like before, when I had normal legs. For the first 5-10 seconds you have to find balance.
It’s quite exciting because I’m going out in front of a big audience. I don’t want to fall face first into the mud, face first onto the ice. Now I feel much more confident on the ice. I feel like I can skate better and faster to a certain extent. I won’t skate like I used to, but I can do it much better.
