World Triathlon Union president Marisol Casado said she sees no problem with the triathlon competition at the 2024 Olympics being transformed into a duathlon.
On Tuesday, World Triathlon announced the postponement of the men’s Olympic triathlon competition from July 30 to 31 due to poor water quality in the Seine River. Women’s competitions are also scheduled for the same day.
– Everyone will be on an equal footing.
– But don’t you think that this is a somewhat unfair approach?
— The competition can be held in the form of a duathlon. Unfortunately, we had to change the format beforehand in order not to cancel the competition. Because without competitions, it is impossible to award medals.
For athletes, it’s part of the job. They have to be able to adapt.
“Our main goal is to organize competitions. And our athletes want to participate in the Olympic Games. I don’t think it’s unfair. It’s just a slightly different format,” Casado said at a news conference.
The Olympic Games take place from July 26 to August 11.
In the Olympic triathlon, athletes first swim (1.5 km), then cycle (40 km) and finish the competition with a run (10 km). Unlike the triathlon, the duathlon is not part of the Olympic program and this discipline does not include swimming.
