IOC calls for respect for WADA decision in case of Chinese swimmers

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) respects the findings of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in the case of the Chinese swimmers, IOC communications director Mark Adams said.

In April, it became known that trimetazidine had been detected in doping tests on 23 Chinese athletes ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, after which it announced that the substance had entered the swimmers’ bodies unintentionally and in small amounts. WADA was unable to refute the Chinese version and did not punish the athletes.

— This is a question that WADA is currently deciding. And the organization has published an investigation report by independent experts. They concluded that this was unintentional doping and that the level of contamination of the samples was minimal. And it could in no way affect sports competitions.

There is a report on the progress of the investigation. And we must respect it and stick to its data. There is no reason to doubt the impartiality of WADA.

We have to trust the World Anti-Doping Agency to do its job. It does a very good job. “I would like to point out that Chinese athletes are the most frequently tested athletes by WADA,” Adams said at a news conference.

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that two Chinese athletes, one of whom had been named to the Olympic team for the 2024 Paris Games, had tested positive for a steroid that is banned in 2022.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said it had found no evidence in the case to challenge the contamination scenario presented by the athletes and Chinada. In turn, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said it had not advised World Aquatics to appeal Chinada’s decisions.
