Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk reached the quarterfinals of the women’s singles tournament at Olympics 2024.
Marta faced the world’s eighth-ranked tennis player by Maria Sakkari from Greece. The tense three-set match lasted almost three hours.
The Ukrainian took the lead in the first set 3:0, but then lost the advantage and lost 4:6. In the second set, Marta managed to win in the tie-break. The decisive set was also a tough fight. Kostyuk managed to take the winning point on the return.
Marta is the only Ukrainian left in the singles draw at the Paris Olympics. Elina Svitolina dropped out at the same stage of the 1/8 finals. Dayana Yastremska lost in the early rounds of the tournament, and Angelina Kalinina was forced to withdraw from the competition due to illness.
In the quarterfinals, Kostyuk will play Donna Vekic from Croatia. The tournament’s 13th seed knocked out world number two Coco Gauff from the United States in the 1/8 finals.
