The Romanian specialist led his home team in the 1980s
Former head coach of Shakhtar and Dynamo Mircea Lucescu confirmed that he was in talks with the Romanian Football Federation over the head coach position Romanian national team.
“It is true that I have spoken with the technical director of the national team, Mihai Stojkice. We have spoken about four times. It would be good to convince Eddie Jordanescu to stay, but…”
“I was always ready to help. I will set a world record. I don’t think there will be a person who will return to the national team after so many years.”
It was previously reported that the current head coach of the Romanian national team, Edward Yordanescu, had decided to leave this post in order to spend more time with his family. Yordanescu’s current contract with the Romanian federation expired at the end of July. In addition to Lucescu, another candidate for the vacant post is Gheorghe Hagi.
Mircea Lucescu, 79, worked with the Romanian national team at the very beginning of his coaching career, from 1981 to 1986. Later, the specialist worked more often with clubs, and headed the Turkish national team.
In early May of this year, information emerged that Dynamo Kyiv had offered its ex-coach the position of general director of the club. At the same time, Lucescu himself stated that he would decide on his future at the end of May. Earlier, the specialist had rejected an offer from Besiktas.
Let us recall that at the 2024 European Championship, the Romanian national team advanced to the playoffs of the tournament, taking first place in Group E. In the first round of the group stage, the Romanians defeated the Ukrainian national team with a score of 3:0. In the 1/8 finals of Euro 2024, the team lost to the Netherlands (0:3).
