Ashur’s team took the lead in the 40th second, but failed to develop their advantage
Polesie in the return match of the second qualifying round Conference Leagues 2024/25 dramatically lost to Slovenian Olympia and finished the European Cup season with a 1:2 result.
After losing in Ljubljana (0:2), Imad Ashour’s team needed to win by at least two goals. The nominal hosts (the match was held in Gliwice, Poland) accomplished half of this task in the 40th second – after a run by Alexander Nazarenko, a flank pass and a ricochet, the onrushing Bohdan Kushnirenko hammered the ball into the net.
Poliesie failed to develop the advantage, moreover, the guests quickly equalized. Raul Floruts moved from the right flank, rocked Eduard Sarapiy and scored against Oleg Kudryk with a shot into the near corner.
The rest of the match was played with the territorial advantage of Polesia. The Ashur team had several half-chances, but did not realize them. The Wolves missed their best moment in the middle of the second half, when Tallem Costa failed to close Paixao’s cross with an accurate shot.
In stoppage time, Olimpia accidentally snatched victory. After a pass from the right, Ivan Durdov hit the ball with one touch, and the ball slipped between Kudrik’s legs.
Having played two debut matches in European competitions, Poliesie scored for the first time. However, this was not enough to advance. Ukraine will be represented in the 2024 European season by Shakhtar (general round of the Champions League), Dynamo (Champions League qualification) and Kryvbas (Europa League qualification).
