“While swimming under the bridge, I saw things I shouldn’t even think about.” Belgian triathlete talks about swimming in the Seine

Belgian triathlete Jolien Vermeulen has criticised organisers of the 2024 Olympic Games competition over the poor water quality of the Seine.

The 30-year-old finished 24th overall on Wednesday, with Frenchwoman Cassandra Beaugrand taking gold. The International Olympic Committee moved the tournament date from July 30 to 31 due to poor water quality in the Seine.

— While swimming under the bridge, I saw things I shouldn’t even think about. The Seine has been polluted for 100 years, the organizers have no right to say that the safety of the athletes is their priority. That’s bullshit!

“If the race does not take place, it would be a shame for the IOC, Paris and the whole of France. Now they can only hope that none of the athletes get sick,” Metro Vermeulen quotes VTM television channel as saying.

Previously, the organisation of triathlon competitions had also been criticised by Swedish and Spanish athletes.
