ISU discusses with IOC further steps regarding bronze medal in 2022 Olympic team tournament, which CAS has retained for Russian skaters

The International Skating Union (ISU) has released a statement following the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) decision to reject Canada’s appeal of the ISU’s decision to redistribute medals in the team event at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games.

In January, the ISU redistributed the tournament’s medals after Russian Kamila Valieva was disqualified for an anti-doping rule violation. The ISU annulled Valieva’s results and moved the Russian team from first to third place. The U.S. team took first place and Japan took second. Team Canada, which placed fourth, also claimed third place by appealing the ISU decision to CAS. On Friday, CAS announced that arbitrators had rejected the Canadian side’s appeal and awarded the Russian skaters the bronze medal.

“This decision brings to an end a long and difficult period for skaters, who have shown extraordinary patience and resilience over the past 29 months.” The ISU is grateful that these dedicated athletes are finally being properly recognized and receiving the medals they so rightly deserve.

Following today’s decision, the ISU is in contact with the IOC to determine further measures regarding third place, the statement said.

Earlier it was reported that the medal ceremony, which would feature the American and Japanese teams, would take place on August 7 in Paris.
