The athlete covered the distance in 2 minutes 06.56 seconds, setting an Olympic record. The previous record belonged to Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, who covered the distance in 2:06.58 at the 2016 Games.
American Alex Walsh came in second across the finish line but was later disqualified. As a result, another U.S. representative, Kate Douglass (2:06.92), took silver and Australian Kayleigh McKeown (2:08.08) took bronze.
The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
