Open water swimming competitions at 2024 Olympics will not take place in Seine, tournament judge says

The open water swimming competitions at the Paris Summer Olympics will definitely not take place in the Seine, tournament judge Alexei Kalinin has said.

On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Triathlon Federation (World Triathlon) decided to cancel the training sessions of triathletes due to the unsatisfactory water quality of the Seine. Previously, for a similar reason, athletes were unable to complete a training swim, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 3.

“We are waiting for a decision whether tomorrow there will be a relay team competition with swimming or whether it will be postponed to August 6, when the start will take place in any case in triathlon or duathlon format.

“In our opinion, open water swimming competitions will definitely no longer take place in the Seine,” Kalinin wrote on his Telegram channel.

The Olympic Games take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11. On Monday, August 5, a mixed triathlon relay is scheduled for the Games.

The women’s 10km open water event is scheduled to take place on August 8, with the men’s a day later.
