Yulia began her quest for gold at the 2024 Olympics as a reserve, but during the tournament she replaced Kravatskaya in the national team
Ukrainian fencer Julia Bakastova commented on her team’s grand victory in the final of the women’s sabre competition Olympics 2024.
“I only remember one thing – you need to believe. I just tried to believe and do. Listen to the coach, listen to the girls.”
“When you have a team of girls like that behind you, anything is possible. It’s true. You feel that strength, you feel that faith, and you believe that you can do it.”
“The coach, of course, pointed out technical errors, what to do, tactical ones… There was something wrong with faith – there we had to fence. Faith is inside.”
Yulia won the gold medal at the Olympic Games as part of the Ukrainian national sabre fencing team. The Ukrainian team defeated South Korea in the final (45:42). Bakastova lost two fights (3:7, 1:5), and tied another (5:5). Record holder Olga Kharlan made a decisive contribution to the victory, beating her opponent in the last fight with a score of 8:2 and bringing Ukraine its first gold at the Games in Paris.
It should be noted that Bakastowa began her quest for gold as a reserve, but during the tournament (in the semi-final against Japan) she replaced Elena Kravatskaya in the national team.
The women’s sabre team brought Ukraine its third medal at the current Games in Paris. Earlier Olga Harlan won a bronze medal in sabre fencing. Sergey Kulish won silver in the 50-meter air rifle three-position event. Another medal for Ukraine was guaranteed by a boxer Alexander Khizhnyak.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will end on August 11. The competition will feature 329 sets of medals in 32 sports.
