Biles, 27, won the vault event Saturday at the Paris Olympics, earning her seventh Olympic gold medal. She now has 10 medals (7 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). Latynina remains the record holder for most Olympic titles among gymnasts, with 9 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze. The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles.
“Biles has two more gold medals to match Latynina. She is trying to do that, and in Paris she has a chance to win another floor exercise, given her strong acrobatics. Although there is always a risk of a fall on the beam, she has a great routine. On the uneven bars, she did not reach the final, but in Paris she can win two more events and match Latynina for the gold medals,” Rodionenko said.
According to the coach, Biles aims to surpass Latynina and become a gold medalist. To do this, she will have to compete at the 2028 Olympics. If she has enough strength and motivation for the next four years, she can accomplish this task. However, Rodionenko stressed that comparing Latynina and Biles is not entirely correct, because modern gymnastics is very different from what it was in Larisa’s time.
Rodionenko also noted that the overall world level of women’s gymnastics has now declined and that at the Paris Olympics the United States and Biles are in leading positions, while other countries are at the same level.
The Paris Olympics run from July 26 to August 11. Russian gymnasts missed the qualifying tournaments due to eligibility criteria.
