Italian Olympic high jump champion Gianmarco Tamberi reported that he had been hospitalized with suspected kidney stones.
The athlete posted a photo from the hospital on his social media.
— Yesterday, two hours after writing “I deserve this” on social media, I felt a stabbing pain in my side. Emergency, CT scan, ultrasound, blood tests. Probably a kidney stone. Three days before the competition for which I sacrificed everything, I am in bed, helpless, with a temperature of 38.8, I should have left today for Paris and started my journey towards a great dream, but I was advised to postpone my flight until tomorrow, hoping that with a little rest this nightmare will end. I don’t deserve any of this. One thing is for sure: I don’t know how, but I will do it, I will be there in the stadium, I will give it my all until the last jump, whatever my condition. I swear to you and I swear to myself,” Tamberi wrote under the photo.
Tamberi was the flag bearer for the Italian team at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
The men’s high jump competition at the Paris Olympics begins on August 7, with qualifying rounds taking place that day. The final is scheduled for August 10.
