Athletistic / Figure skating. World Championship silver medalist, Russian figure skater Alena Leonova, said the bronze medals in the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, could be called a “small victory” for the Russian team.
“It so happened that the Russian team was deprived of Olympic gold, but now, that the guys get at least bronze medals, I think that in this case everything could have ended even worse, and in theory, the bronze medals could have gone to the Canadian. Of course, after the loss of gold, other medals are no longer so pleasing, but now the path will be at least like this, I would like to consider this a small victory,” Leonova was quoted as saying by RB Sport.
Kamila Valieva was charged with an anti-doping rule violation and was stripped of all results as of December 21, 2021. As a result, the Russian team dropped from first to third place in the team figure skating competition at the 2022 Olympics.
On June 12, CAS held hearings on three appeals from the Russian side. They were submitted by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR), as well as Russian figure skaters Alexander Gallyamov, Anastasia Mishina, Nikita Katsalapov, Victoria Sinitsina, Mark Kondratyuk and Kamila Valieva (all participants of the figure skating team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games). Russia insists on returning its gold medals. However, CAS rejected the Russians’ appeal.
On August 2, CAS dismissed the Canadian Olympic Committee’s appeal against the results of the team figure skating competition at the 2022 Olympic Games. As a result, the Russian skaters retained their bronze medals.
