Phelps seeks lifetime doping ban

American, twenty-three times Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps said athletes caught doping should be banned for life.

In April, the New York Times reported that trimetazidine had been found in samples taken from 23 Chinese swimmers ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. According to the publication, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, after which it announced that the substance had entered the athletes’ bodies unintentionally and in small amounts. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was unable to refute the Chinese version and did not sanction the athletes.

“If you test positive, you should never be allowed to come back and compete again.” I think that’s the end of the story. If everyone isn’t tested the same way, we’re in serious trouble because it means the sport isn’t fair. If you take that risk [как употребление допинга]then you don’t belong here.

People have called me a fraud my whole career. I have had a lot of tests done – blood and urine – every week. For what? So that I can say that I am not a fraud, I am clean, here are the results. I have won 23 Olympic gold medals cleanly. It is possible.

“It breaks my heart to see people put in four years of hard work to prepare for the Olympics, only to have that reward stolen by someone who cheats. It’s wrong,” Phelps said, according to ESPN.

Two swimmers from China’s 4x100m medley relay team, which won gold at the 2024 Olympics, were among the athletes allowed to compete at the Games in France, even after testing positive for doping. The positive test results were attributed to “contamination.”
