Russian high jumper Maria Kochanova said coaches should help young athletes solve problems that arise as they grow.
— Puberty started late for me, around the age of 17, and I was fully confronted with all of its difficulties. And the swelling was severe and I gained weight, probably five to seven kilos. It was very difficult to go through all of that. But over the years, we got through all of that. I became more defined, I started to feel comfortable, I understood at what weight I could work effectively and at what weight I could not.
“It seems to me that the coach should first talk to the girls about it. Because when you are not ready for such changes, you do not understand how the situation will develop, and it becomes much more difficult to follow the process,” Kochanova said, as quoted by RT.
At the end of July, Kochanova won the first “New Height” tournament in Moscow with a score of 1.91 meters. She also beat Olympic champion Maria Lasitskene.
