Athletistic / Doping. American Michael Phelps, a 23-time Olympic swimming champion, believes that anti-doping rule violators should be banned from professional sport for life.
“If you test positive for drugs you should never be allowed to compete professionally. I believe I have committed an offence and that is that. If everyone is not tested in the same way then we have a serious problem because it means the sport becomes dishonest. If you take risks and take drugs then you have no place in world sport.
“It hurts me to see people put in a tremendous amount of effort for four years to prepare for the Olympics and then be robbed of their reward by someone who cheats in some way. It’s all wrong!” ESPN quotes Phelps as saying.
- See it for yourself. Russia has announced a boycott of the Paris Olympics.
Two swimmers from China’s gold medal-winning 4x100m medley relay team at the 2024 Paris Olympics have been named in a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) investigation into doping in Chinese swimming. However, they were allowed to compete in the 2024 Olympics despite testing positive for doping. The test results were upheld by the court but attributed to “contamination.”
