World Aquatics cancels swimmers’ training in Seine for Olympics due to high levels of enterococci

The International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics), in collaboration with the Paris Olympics organizing committee, canceled athletes’ training in the Seine on Tuesday due to the level of enterococcus infection in the water being exceeded.

— World Aquatics has decided to cancel Tuesday’s marathon introductory swim due to water quality concerns. Athletes were scheduled to practice from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., but after a 4 a.m. meeting, the decision was made by the governing body in conjunction with the Games’ organizing committee.

Water quality testing showed that E. coli levels at four collection points in samples taken between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. on August 5 ranged from 326 to 517, which is considered “very good” to “good.” However, enterococcus levels exceeded World Aquatics’ maximum thresholds during the morning inspection. The latest enterococcus samples (taken between 12:30 and 1:20 p.m. on August 4) showed levels exceeding the maximum allowable thresholds.

Laboratory analysis of Enterococcus levels in the Seine River on August 5 is available today at 11:00 a.m. The latest Enterococcus results show an improvement in the water quality of the Seine River, but one of the four tests still does not meet World Aquatics’ water quality standards, World Aquatics said in a statement.

It is specified that a decision on holding a second initiation session for swimmers in the Seine will be taken on Wednesday morning based on the results of the water analyses.

— The second introductory swimming session at the competition venue is scheduled for August 7 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A water quality testing session will take place at 4 a.m. on August 7, during which World Aquatics will decide whether or not to hold an introductory session on August 7.

With favorable weather forecasts and test results, World Aquatics and the Games Organizing Committee remain confident that the marathon swimming competitions on August 8 and 9 will take place as planned, the statement said.

The Paris Olympics will end on August 11.
