Double Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei The Ugandan has announced his decision to withdraw from the 5000m race at the Paris Olympics.

“I am proud to have won gold in the 10,000 metres at the Games. This medal completes my collection after winning the World Championships and setting a world record. In discussion with the team, we decided that it was better not to compete in the 5,000 metres. Thank you all for your support and see you soon,” the Ugandan athlete wrote on the social network.

On August 2, Cheptegei, 27, won gold at the Paris Olympics in the 10,000m. He is also the winner of the Tokyo Olympics in the 5,000m.

In August 2020, the athlete set a world record over this distance, showing a result of 12 minutes 35.36 seconds at the Diamond League stage in Monaco.

The Paris Olympics will last until August 11.
