Winfred surpassed the record set by a Russian woman in 2008
Bahraini track and field athlete Winfred Yavi triumphantly completed the women’s final race at 3000 meters steeplechase on Olympics 2024 in Paris.
The new champion managed to run the distance in 8 minutes and 52.76 seconds, thereby improving the Olympic record, set by Russian representative Gulnara Saitova-Galkina back in 2008, by more than six seconds.
At the same time, the world record (8:44.32) in this discipline, which has been held by Kenyan Beatrice Chepkoech since 2018, remained intact. The latter also took part in the Paris final, but only finished sixth.
Tokyo champion Perut Chemutai from Uganda won silver with a national record, while another Kenyan, Faith Cherotich, won bronze with a career-best result.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will end on August 11. The competitions will feature 329 sets of awards in 32 sports. Ukraine is represented in Paris by 140 athletes in 23 sports – this is the smallest representation of the blue and yellow during the Olympics.
