Averin’s coach thinks judges could ‘repeat’ Ashram’s Olympic scores at Israeli Grand Prix

Judges who served at the 2021 Israel Rhythmic Gymnastics Grand Prix, who later officiated at the Tokyo Olympics, were able to repeat the Israeli gymnast’s scores in advance Linoy Ashram . This opinion was adopted in the fall of a year – two months after the end of the Olympics – expressed by coach Vera Shatalina, who worked with Russians Dina and Arina Averina.

publishes this interview for the first time – exactly one year after these events.

At the Tokyo Olympics Dina Averine passed all four types of all-around without errors visible to the eye, but took second place. Israeli Lina Ashram won with a loss in the ribbon exercise. Dinah’s sister Arina Averine – she also made a big mistake in the tape and did not get on the podium, remaining in fourth place. For the first time since 1996, a Russian gymnast did not win the all-around at the Olympics. This gave rise to one of the biggest refereeing scandals in rhythmic gymnastics and in world sports in general.

– Above all, I was alarmed by the last tournament before the Olympics – the Israel Grand Prix (which was held from July 16 to 17, 2021 – less than a month before the rhythmic gymnastics competitions at the Olympics – about “”). There Linoy received such ratings that no one received at all in the season. And we were all shocked. There, she was awarded a point, a point and a half more…

– That is to say that even taking into account home refereeing, the scores are too high?

– Do you know why the girls said, “We will be torn at the Olympics? Because guest judges came to see them at the Israeli Grand Prix. And there were 80% of those judges in the brigade who would then judge the Olympics. And they gave very high marks! And after that, we never met these judges anywhere, only right away at the Olympics, you know? We were not allowed to participate in the Israeli Grand Prix.

– So they already had a kind of impression?

– They already had some sort of usually incomprehensible push by rating her performance by 1.5, and sometimes even 2 points more than she previously received for the same skill! And now that was a really nasty call before the Olympics. I was very struck by these competitions, but I thought maybe because we weren’t there, and no matter how much she had no one to compete with, that’s why ‘they were evaluated like that… But like that.

“Apparently that was not the case at all.

– Well, it turns out, as you can see, they repeated the refereeing at the Olympics in this way. Maybe it was.
