Olympic cyclist Yakovlev’s sprint record lasted several minutes

Israeli cyclist Mikhail Yakovlev set an Olympic record in sprint qualifying at the 2024 Games in Paris; his feat was surpassed a few minutes later by two other competitors.

The athlete achieved a result of 9.152 seconds; the previous Olympic record belonged to the Dutchman Jeffrey Hoagland (9.215).

Later Australian Matthew Richardson updated the world record – 9.091 seconds, then beat his time Harry Lavreisen from the Netherlands (9,088). The world record was previously held by Nicholas Paul of Trinidad and Tobago (9,100).

Yakovlev managed to overcome the qualifying barrier for the sprint; his opponent in the 1/32 finals will be Malaysian Muhammad Sahrom.

Yakovlev is a bronze medalist at the 2021 Keirin World Championships. In August 2022, the athlete received an Israeli passport; he had previously competed for Russia.

The Paris Olympics will end on August 11.
