This phrase supposedly sounds like propaganda
Scandal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris involving a Ukrainian athlete: The International Canoe Federation forced the Ukrainian Anastasia Rybachok paint over the inscription “I am Ukrainian” on his boat.
The story with the boat and its design is very symbolic for the athlete. Anastasia Rybachok developed the design of the image on the canoe herself, putting in the context of the extremely important self-identity and Ukrainian invincibility.
“The International Olympic Committee prohibits any inscriptions related to war from being placed on boats. For example, we cannot write “Stop War”. They consider it propaganda. But the inscription “I am Ukrainian” is different, it indicates our belonging to Ukraine, this is important. This is, first of all, a symbol of faith in me and my capabilities. When creating the design for the canoe, I wanted to emphasize that I am from Ukraine and I am incredibly proud of it!”
On Friday, August 9, Rybachok will compete with Lyudmila Luzan in the semifinals of the canoe-pair 500m. Tomorrow, August 8, the Ukrainian will compete in the qualifying single 200m race.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will end on August 11. The competitions will feature 329 sets of awards in 32 sports. Ukraine is represented in Paris by 140 athletes in 23 sports – this is the smallest representation of the blue and yellow during the Olympics.
