Athletistic/OI-2024. Lydia Ivanova, a two-time Olympic champion, coach and commentator, compared nine-time American Olympic champion Simone Biles to Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina.

“There is no point in comparing Biles to Latynina. It is a useless exercise. In Tokyo, we saw that Biles is not as strong without the support of medication: her performances were clearly dependent on chemicals. The doping control commission gave her the green light, and that explains a lot.

Simone should not be discussed in the context of such comparisons. She is not comparable to Larisa Semyonovna. Biles may influence future athletes by showing them difficult elements, but comparing her to Latynina is wrong. Simone is praised, but this is a chemistry contest with a real person. These are two completely different categories. But I really like Rebeca Andrade from Brazil, it is nice to watch her performances,” Ivanova said in an interview with Match TV.

Biles had previously failed to win a medal on the balance beam at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While performing one of the elements, she fell and the judges scored her performance 13.100 points, which put her in fifth place.

  • Latynina is glad that Biles couldn’t break her record for most Olympic wins
