Russian Dvorkovich re-elected as head of FIDE

Ukrainian Barishpolets applied for the position

Presidential elections held in Chennai, India International Chess Federation (FIDE). The victory was won by the current president of the organization Russian Arkady Dvorkovich.

157 delegates voted for Dvorkovich. Recall that a Ukrainian also participated in the FIDE presidential election Andrey Barishpoletsfor which 16 delegates voted.

Also participating in the elections were Inalbek Sheripov, who withdrew from the elections for health reasons, and Frenchman Bahar Kuatli, who announced his refusal to run for office during the General Assembly.

Interestingly, the Russian Dvorkovich has been heading FIDE since October 2018. In March, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, on behalf of the organization, spoke out against the war in Ukraine.

From July 28 to August 10, the Chess Olympiad takes place in Chennai, India. Initially, the tournament was supposed to be held in Moscow from July 26 to August 8, but due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, FIDE decided to move the Olympiad to India.
