Tola covered the 42km (195m) distance in 2 hours 6 minutes and 26 seconds, setting a new Olympic record. Belgium’s Bashir Abdi finished 21 seconds behind the winner, while Kenya’s Benson Kipruto finished 34 seconds behind the winner.
Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya was unable to complete the distance.
