Dutch representative Hassan won marathon at Paris Games with Olympic record, Russian native Trofimova came 14th

Representative of the Netherlands Sifan Hassan became the winner of the women’s marathon at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Hassan covered the 42km (195m) distance in 2 hours 22 minutes 55 seconds, setting an Olympic record. The previous feat was held by Ethiopia’s Tiki Gelana (2 hours 23 minutes 7 seconds) at the 2012 London Games.

Previously, Hassan, 31, won two bronze medals at the Paris Games: in the 5,000m and 10,000m. At Tokyo 2020, Hassan won two gold medals in those distances. Also from Ethiopia, representing the Netherlands, she is also a two-time world champion in the 1,500m and 10,000m.

The second place in the marathon at the 2024 Olympic Games was won by Ethiopian Tigist Assefa, who lost 3 seconds to Hassan at the finish line. Kenyan Hellen Obiri finished third (+15 seconds).

Originally from Yakutsk Sardana Trofimova who previously competed for Russia and now represents Kyrgyzstan, took 14th place, setting a national record. Trofimova, 36, finished in 2 hours 26 minutes 47 seconds, ahead of the 2020 Games marathon winner and world record holder Perez Jepchirchir of Kenya.

The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
