Fonseca: Medals won by Ukraine at Paris Olympics show how brave, competitive and ambitious the Ukrainian people are

The ex-manager of Shakhtar once again expressed his admiration and support for the people of Ukraine

Head coach Milana Paulo Fonsecawho previously headed Donetsk Minershared his opinion on the performance of Ukrainian athletes at Olympics 2024.

The Portuguese specialist has repeatedly spoken out in support of Ukraine and its people since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. The coach came to his first press conference in Milan with a Ukrainian flag.

In 2016-19, Fonseca coached Shakhtar. Under his leadership, the Miners won the Ukrainian Championship and Cup three times. Previously, Paulo worked in Porto and Braga, and after Shakhtar, he headed Roma and Lille. The 51-year-old specialist became the head coach of Milan in June 2024.

Ukraine was represented at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris by 140 athletes in 23 sports – this is the smallest representation of the blue and yellow during the Olympics. Nevertheless, the Ukrainians were able to win 12 medals at these Games and take the final 22nd place. Three gold, five silver and four bronze medals are more than Ukraine was predicted to win before the start of the Olympics, and at the same time the best result for our country at the Olympics in the last 12 years.

The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games will begin today at 22:00 Kyiv time. The flag bearers of Ukraine will be Greco-Roman wrestler Parviz Nasibov and canoeist Lyudmila Luzan, silver medalists of the current Games.
