Athletistic / IOC. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe intends to run for a similar position at the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The Briton will replace Thomas Bach, who has decided not to seek re-election.
“I have always made it clear that if the opportunity presented itself, I would definitely consider it. Now it has presented itself, and I am seriously considering it.
I myself have had the privilege of competing in two Olympic Games, of chairing the UK Olympic Committee, of overseeing the London 2012 Olympic Games and now of holding the best job in the world as president of a major Olympic sport.
“It’s an experience that, if combined with other aspects of my life, would be useful for the position of IOC president,” Coe was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Thomas Bach has been leading the IOC since autumn 2013. In 2021, the German was re-elected for a four-year term, which, according to the regulations of the Olympic Charter, should be his last. It is worth noting that Bach himself asked the IOC Executive Board to schedule the elections for the head of the organisation for 26 March 2024. The new president will take office on 24 June.
